What Diseases Do Pigeons Carry?
Intro
Pigeons are generally harmless and can even be kept as household pets. Pigeons can also be a source of entertainment if you have some food for them. But many people rightly ask – Are pigeons disease carriers? Pigeons were mainly used for sending messages in earlier times due to their homing abilities, and these birds have been popular for many centuries. Science in the 21st century has been able to discover that these birds carry many diseases depending on their location and season of the year.
Types of Diseases Pigeons CarryFever:
Pigeon droppings that manage to get into your food/water could lead to a very high fever. This fever is caused by the E. coli pathogen.
Histoplasmosis:
This is a fungal disease and results in the gradual damage of the lungs. It has fever-like symptoms, and the disease-causing organism is the fungus Histoplasma Capsulatum.
Encephalitis:
Encephalitis is spread by pigeons after their blood has been fed on for long periods by mosquitoes. The disease is characterised by inflammation of the brain, drowsiness, nausea, neck pain and fever. This disease remains one of the rarest to have been discovered in pigeons, and has fatal symptoms.
Other diseases spread by pigeons are:
