Pro Bird Control Rochester Tip of the Month:
Biology of a Pigeon
The word “Pigeon” is a French word derived from the Latin “pipio” that means a peeping chick. A pigeon is a small graceful bird most famous for its white colour and astonishing beauty. They belong to a family of birds called “columbidae”.
Size and Appearance:
Pigeons vary drastically in size ranging from 15 to 75 centimetres. They weigh from somewhere in between 30 grams to even 2 kilograms. They generally have short legs, short bills with a very fleshy care. They are also known to have no gall bladders in their tiny little bodies.
Habitat:
Pigeons are distributed to almost all the places except where there are extreme weather conditions. They mostly prefer oceans as there places to live. Many different places are a natural habitat now to different species of pigeons. The eared pigeons are found in the west America and Columbia. The Eurasian coloured and the laughing pigeons are found mostly in the Middle East and South East Asia in countries such as Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka.
Feed:
Most species of the Pigeon family are known to just have seeds and some small fruits as their main diet. They are mostly herbivores with an exception of some few bigger species of Pigeons that eat small insects and worms as well as seeds and fruits.
Life Span:
Pigeons usually have a very short life span. Some of the smaller breeds only have the tendency to live up to only 3 years before they die due to old age whereas only a few breeds cross the 10 year mark. However this was not always the case, in medieval times, Pigeons were known to live at least a 15 years with ease. The oldest a Pigeon has ever been recorded by history was a mind-boggling 37 years but the sources do not confirm the exact breed.
